Debt collection agency vs reminder app vs Debtorinfo
There are three common ways New Zealand businesses recover overdue invoices. Here's how they stack up.
| Commission-based agency | Invoice reminder app | Debtorinfo | |
|---|---|---|---|
| How you pay | Typically a percentage of each debt recovered | Monthly subscription | Flat monthly subscription, no commission |
| Who the debtor pays | Often the agency, which then pays you | You | You, directly |
| Who controls each account | The agency, once lodged | You | You — every step sent when you say so |
| Third-party escalation | Yes | Usually not | Yes — four steps from Debtorinfo |
| Credit-rating consequences | Varies | No | Yes — A1 rating warning and Credit Stop |
| When it starts | Once the debt is old | Before and on the due date | From around 30 days overdue, while it's still fresh |
| Customer relationship | Can feel heavy-handed | Friendly but easy to ignore | Friendly first, firmer only when needed |
| Terms of trade, PPSR & legal docs | Sometimes, at extra cost | No | Included in your subscription |
Do the maths
What commission really costs you
Commission rates vary, but as an illustration: if you lodge $20,000 of overdue invoices over a year with an agency charging 20% commission, $4,000 of your money goes to the collector. The same year on Debtorinfo Platinum costs $599.40 + GST — with unlimited collections, unlimited credit checks and your full document library included.
And because Debtorinfo starts while debts are still fresh, more invoices are paid before they ever need serious escalation. That's what our subscribers mean when they say it "always gets a positive result".
- Keep 100% of every dollar recovered
- One predictable fee, no surprises and no hidden costs
- Members of trade groups and business associations get Platinum for the Gold price

Questions
No-commission debt collection FAQs
Is there really no commission?
Yes. Debtorinfo charges a flat monthly subscription from $29.95 + GST with unlimited collections. We never take a percentage of what you recover and never add loading fees to your debt.
How is Debtorinfo different from a debt collection agency?
A traditional agency takes over the debt and is typically paid a percentage of what it collects. With Debtorinfo you stay in control: you choose which accounts are chased and when, the first reminders come from you, and debtors pay you directly. Debtorinfo supplies the escalation, the credit-rating leverage and the legal support.
Can I still escalate a debt if the letters do not work?
Yes. If a debtor ignores the reminder sequence they lose their A1 credit rating and are placed on a Credit Stop. You can then ask us to list the debtor on bad debtor databases used by banks, negotiate by phone, or help prepare a Disputes Tribunal claim or Notice of Proceedings, each for a small extra charge.
When does an online debt collection service make more sense than an agency?
For most small and medium businesses with a steady stream of overdue invoices, a flat-fee online service is cheaper and keeps the customer relationship intact. Agencies can still make sense for very old, high-value debts where a debtor cannot be located, and Debtorinfo can help prepare the file if you go that way.
Can I recover collection costs from the debtor?
If your customer agreed to terms of trade that allow it, you may be able to recover reasonable collection costs and late payment fees. Debtorinfo subscribers receive personalised terms of trade and credit application forms that set this up properly from the start.
What happens if a debt is disputed?
With one click you can send the debtor a letter or email with Disputes Tribunal forms attached, and Debtorinfo keeps the invoices, reminders and notes organised so your claim is clear.
